Terry Darlington’s boat goes up in flames
Moored Calveley, Shropshire Union Canal
What a tragic story this morning from the Trent & Mersey Canal, Terry’s narrowboat The Phyllis May was burnt completely out along with two other boats moored by. Thank goodness nobody was on board any of the boats involved.
It is every livaboard’s nightmare, fire.. It was thought to have started in one of the other boat’s engine room.. just goes to show doesn’t it, that you cannot be too careful with all the electrics to do with our boating systems.
I really feel for the Darlingtons today, they must be feeling devastated, although Terry comments that he was insured, and is just glad nobody was hurt.
There will not be many boaters who do now know about Terry’s exploits.. but for those that don’t, he had cruised across the channel in this boat, cruised through France.. and taken it to America, cruising the Florida Keys as well as many of the canals over there.
He’ll be back.. he’s that type of guy..

Oh no not the Phyllis May. Their exploits together with Jim the narrow dog, have had me in stitches and Terry writes so cleverly, you feel as if you were on the boat with them. I am so sorry about the “narrow boat” and wish them well in the future.

Sylvia,
That was quite some time ago, they have now had a new narrowboat built which you have now probably read about, and are still enjoying their travels. A new book is on the way!

They make me want to go out and get myself a whippet.

Cy,
I think their whippet was rather special.. I wondered how they got on when they crossed the channel.. I could see the pour dog crossing it legs!
