A quiet cruise to the bustle of Norbury Wharf

Knighton to Norbury Junction, Shropshire Union Canal, 4 miles 0 locks

Ooops I needed a reminder of what I had in my cupboard after the grandchildren came back from Disneyland….

From the comments last night…

*Request* Please can the Easen family see a pic
of your newest bauble?  :)

OK!

Shropshire Union Canal

My Disney 2009 bauble from Florida hanging happily on the front cupboard.  (I don’t have any pretty string!). If I hang it as a dingly from the tinsel then it swings round and I can’t see the Disney bit!

Knighton to Norbury today…

Shebdon Embankment, Shropshire Union Canal

Not far from Knighton is the ‘entrance’ to the Sheldon embankment.  At over a mile long, it was a devil of a job to build with leaking and landslides causing all sorts of problems.  It took over 5 years to build just this one mile of the Shroppie, 5 years for working boats to have to wait for the two ends of the canal to be joined.

The gate in the above pic closes along with another at the other end stopping water from piling through if and when there is a breach as happened this summer for many weeks…

This used to be the Cadbury factory which shipped to London.. still the factory produces but it is dried milk now, although going past there is definitely a chocolatey sniff in the air!  I am pleased they have saved this wharf, for sure it will have a future now in our heritage.

The fitter at Norbury Wharf Ltd came aboard when we arrived and just tacked back one or two of the bottom planks of the tongue and groove which had settled not quite right on the wall since the refit, and we topped up with 25kg bags of anthracite at a super price of £7.50.. well pleased with that.

Oh and one happy, happy doggie today!  Meg was allowed back on the towpath to run with Lucy.. Not heard a peak out of her all evening.. I wonder why!
